Waterworld: H2O Minutes - Episode 48 | "Mellow Jazz"

As night falls, Helen finds the Mariner sitting on the bowsprit listening to a wind-powered CD player that he pieced together from salvage. She is fascinated by the artifacts and assumes they are from Dryland. She asks after the Mariner’s name and he reveals that He has no need for one. Helen hands over one of Enola’s drawings, as well as a crayon.

With Whalefin steaks on the grill, Helen, Enola, and the Mariner share a meal. Enola hums to herself pleasantly, but the Mariner’s scowling prompts the girl to ask him why he doesn’t like her singing. The Mariner longs for his days of quiet solitude on his boat. He notes that it will rain that night and allows Helen to drink her fill. Enola looks at the Mariner’s feet and wishes aloud that she could swim.

The Mariner reaches his limit with Helen, he throws her fishing rod overboard and heads below deck. He emerges a short time later with an odd harpoon gun which he ties to the winch and dives overboard. Helen and Enola watch as the Mariner is dragged behind the boat, but their fascination turns to shock and horror as a massive creature swallows the Mariner whole.

On the Deez, the Deacon dreams of reaching Dryland and determines a spot on the map to ambush the Trimaran. On the Trimaran, the wind has died and Helen’s concern is wholly focused on finding food for Enola. The Mariner is dismissive as usual, more concerned with scanning the horizon than worrying about sustenance.

Cornered like a rat, the Drifter brandishes his knife at his host, calling him stingy for hoarding women. The Mariner pulls a knife from his belt and the men rush each other. Up on deck, Helen grabs a gun and watches as the drifter crawls from the hatch. He tries to stumble towards his boat but falls dead. The Mariner makes quick work of looting the Drifter’s boat and dumping the body.

Helen drops through the hatch leading below deck and finds herself alone with the chittering drifter who looms behind her like a predator circling his prey. She seizes on an opportunity to grab a weapon from the wall, but the Drifter is oddly strong and disarms her. Suddenly, the hatch opens, and the Mariner appears to announce that the deal is off.

The Drifter opens a canister and produces his most valuable possession; paper, the life-savings of some Atoll refugees. Helen reminds the pair that she is not an item to be bought and sold, but her words fall on deaf ears as the Mariner negotiates the terms of Helen’s prostitution. The Drifter is granted half an hour with Helen and goes below deck. Helen, seething, follows him.

Half-starved, dehydrated, and near-raving mad the Drifter eyes the Trimaran greedily taking note of the bare tomato plant as well as Helen and Enola. He trades Helen her necklace for a fishing rod, but the Mariner is only interested in resin. The Mariner tries to dismiss the Drifter, but Helen has caught his eye and He’s determined not to leave without some human contact.

The Mariner plucks his one and only tomato from the plant he purchased at the Atoll and carefully consumes it in front of Helen and Enola who haven’t eaten in days. Scanning the horizon, the Mariner spies a drifter looking to trade. Though He is reluctant to stop, Helen’s insistence leads the Mariner to approach the Drifter and commence trading.

As the Mariner repairs his boat, the Deacon interrogates the Smoker Pilot who is distraught over the death of his gunner. Deacon half-heartedly consoles the Pilot who points out the location of the Trimaran on Nord’s map. The Deacon and his Second-in-command discuss their strategy for capturing the Mariner.

With both of their vehicles in peril, the Smoker Pilot and Mariner struggle to sever the harpoon cable connecting them. A well-placed shot from the Pilot frees the seaplane and slingshots the Mariner through the air into the water. The Mariner returns to the boat and after seeing the damage wrought by the attack, slashes Helen’s hair from her head.

The gunfire from the Smoker seaplane sends Helen and Enola running for cover while the Mariner heads below deck to prepare a counter-attack. Helen takes matters into her own hands and uses the boat’s harpoon gun to kill the gunner. The victory is short-lived as the harpoon gun is torn from the bowsprit and the plane finds itself tethered to the trimaran.

Helen rushes to Enola’s rescue. The Mariner considers leaving his passengers behind for a moment before relenting and turning the Trimaran around. Helen is able to reach Enola and get them both back onto the boat, She is irate with the Mariner, but he silences her quickly as the Smoker’s sky boat appears on the Horizon and begins circling them.

Enola is upset that the Mariner does not appreciate her drawings and storms off to sulk. The Mariner growls at Helen complaining about their presence on his boat. Undaunted by his demeanor, Enola confronts the Mariner once again, calling his bluff on his prickly exterior. Enola strikes a chord and the Mariner snaps, heaving her over the side of the boat.

Helen keeps her word and gives her ration of water to Enola. Enola wanders over to the Mariner and after thanking him for not murdering them gives him an innocent kiss on his cheek. He answers this by shoving her down and storming off. The Mariner’s ire is only raised further at the discovery that Enola has been defacing his boat with her drawings.

The Depth Gauge delivers the dire news that the Smoker’s strategic reserve of crude oil is running low which prompts Deacon to focus his efforts. No more frivolity, every effort must focus on finding Enola and Dryland before the Deez is overrun by a population spiraling out of control. Meanwhile, on the Trimaran, the Mariner has managed to get his filter working again.

The Doctor declares his work finished and Deacon’s new false eye is revealed, a grotesque item that all gathered agree is a charming accessory. The Ledger Guy arrives reporting a problem in The Pit. Finished with the Doctor, Deacon calls for his car which conveys him through the crowded bowels of The Deez eventually arriving at the hatch leading to the Smoker’s tank of crude oil.

Enola emerges from below deck to investigate the commotion, but the Mariner climbs the mast to be alone. Meanwhile, on The Deez, the Smoker’s resident Doctor uses a paintbrush to put some final touches on a special project.

The Mariner refuses her offer and Helen is forced to resort to threatening Him with a harpoon gun, a move that proves equally ineffective.

Helen places herself between the Mariner and Enola, believing that He means to throw the girl overboard, and amidst their sudden physical contact, Helen gets an idea and sends Enola below deck.
