Mad Max Minute - Finding Nemo (2003)

Dive into a world of water with 2003’s Finding Nemo. Directed by Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich, Finding Nemo follows Marlin, voiced by Albert Brooks, and his companion Dory, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, as they scour the ocean in hopes of delivering on the title of the movie. Disney and Pixar deliver 100 minutes of cinema, packed to the gills with colorful characters from vegetarian sharks and lobsters with Boston accents to surprising voice cameos from your favorite prime-time television shows. Does this critical darling hold up after nearly two decades, or is this fish a flop? It’s time to “grab some shell” and surf the East Australian Current as we find out.

Mad Max Minute - Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

Before he was the Mariner, and before he was the Bodyguard, Kevin Costner brought his distinctly American accent to 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. After returning to England from the Crusades with Azeem, played by Morgan Freeman, Robin of Locksley discovers his father murdered and his ancestral home lying in ruins. He quickly learns from Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as the Maid Marian, that the villainous Alan Rickman, as the Sheriff of Nottingham, is seizing power in a bid for King Richard’s throne. Robin takes to the trees alongside the Merry Men of Sherwood forest to rob the rich, give to the poor, and save England from the Sheriff’s machinations.

Mad Max Minute - Sliding Doors (1998)

Gwyneth Paltrow stars as Helen in Peter Howitt’s 1998 romantic comedy. After being fired from her public relations job. Helen’s life takes two diverging paths. On one path, Helen catches the train home and discovers her boyfriend, Gerry (John Lynch), in bed with Lydia (Jeanne Tripplehorn), his ex who recently returned from America. She leaves him and begins a relationship with James (John Hannah), starts her own business, and gets a makeover. On the other path, Helen misses the train, is none the wiser of Gerry’s infidelity and has a miserable time of it. It’s 100 minutes of late 90’s romance set against a London backdrop.

Mad Max Minute - Easy Rider (1969)

Get your motor running and head out on the highway for what many consider a celebration of nonconformism and a reflection of social tensions in late-1960s America. Dennis Hopper makes his directorial debut as he and Peter Fonda jump on their motorcycles for a road trip from California to New Orleans, Louisiana, for Mardi Gras. Along their path, they meet a colorful cast of characters showcasing the different ways that people are finding their own version of the American dream. But for Wyatt (Fonda) and Billy (Hopper), the freedom and independence they seek may be beyond their reach no matter how far they ride.

Mad Max Minute - The Bodyguard (1992)

From director Mick Jackson and writer Lawrence Kasdan comes the harrowing tale of an R&B singer caught in the crosshairs of an assassin and the ex-secret service agent tasked with keeping her safe. Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston) is on the cusp of an academy award, but unbeknownst to her, a stalker is sending her threatening messages. Her management decides to call in the best man for the job: Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner). Frank’s no-nonsense and cautious nature quickly clashes with Rachel’s free-wheeling and fancy-free lifestyle, but they’ll have to overcome their differences if she wants to survive.

Mad Max Minute - Dead Calm (1989)

After spending two years dissecting the movie touted as Mad Max on the ocean, it’s time to sit down with the high seas horror thriller from Kennedy Miller productions. John (Sam Neill) and Rae (Nicole Kidman) are a married couple taking an extended cruise to emotionally heal after losing their child in a car accident. Their isolation is interrupted by Hughie (Billy Zane), who claims to be the traumatized survivor of a botulism outbreak. When John decides to investigate his claims, Hughie takes control of the ship and kidnaps Rae. Now it’s up to John and Rae to work in parallel to subdue Hughie and survive Hughie’s sinking schooner.
